The United Kingdom (UK) is arguably Europe's most influential country. In simple terms, it is the union of the individual countries of England, Scotland and Wales collectively called Great Britain which is Europe's largest island and the northeastern corner of Ireland - the constitutionally distinct region of Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. Its reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is also the Queen and Head of State of (15) other Commonwealth realms, including Australia, Canada, Jamaica and New Zealand. It was the significant factor and strongest ingredient in the development of many English speaking countries, including the United States - its closest ally. Throughout the 19th Century, Great Britain was the world's dominant industrial and maritime power. It played a huge role in the development of our modern democracies, and in the advancements of literature, manufacturing, science and the performing arts. Despite the global decline of the British Empire, the United Kingdom remains a consequential force. It is the fifth largest economy in the world, second largest in Europe, and a respected major military power. The UK higher education sector, government and the devolved HE administrations have been active in the Bologna Process since the beginning. Their contribution has been substantial. The food you can buy in the UK reflects the many ethnic influences in British society. Most supermarkets sell ingredients from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as food from many other parts of the world. The British are increasingly healthy eaters and there is a very wide range of organic produce available in shops and supermarkets Many UK institutions have state-of-the-art sports facilities, but you can also use local authority or private leisure centre’s to keep fit and healthy. When you go to UK, you will find an array of exciting experiences to discover - music, celebrations, accents, people to meet, places to visit – the list is endless. As the UK is such a cosmopolitan society you will find that many UK customs are already familiar to you – so you will settle in faster than you think.  As a student in the UK, there are many opportunities to attend or participate in organized sports activities, or get involved in charitable events like sponsored walks and runs.
